With Mantis boarders, I know I can suffocate them out. Though it's more accurate to say delay rather than prevent, because I'm not guaranteed to destroy the enemy before it can plink down the Zoltan Shield.

My first thought was maybe this was the ship to take to an early Abandoned Sector, since the Zoltan Shields prevent enemies teleporting boarders. My new random ship game gave me Zoltan A, and my sector 3 choices are either a Mantis-Controlled Sector or the Abandoned Sector. Of course if you want to pick up some extra Lanius crew, either to add to existing Lanius crew or to pick up a 2-Lanius boarding party, then the Abandoned sectors are the only place to get Lanius crew.īeyond that, are there ships/system combos/weapon loadouts that make the Abandoned sector a favorable one to choose? In addition there was a discarded event for the downright dystopian Rockmen Nurseries. In hundreds of hours of playing, I have only been into the Abandoned sector a few times, and I think only when I have played Lanius ships. Attacks by ghost ships were explicitly from being haunted by literal ghosts and not something mundane like an AI malfunction in a derelict. Ghosts were apparently once considered as an actual part of the setting and not a mere placeholder or work around for victory condition detection based upon having zero crew. The game had some cut story concepts persisting in XML files. After some negotiation, the resulting compromise led to the "layered" sector themes in the final version.

A new plan for the soundtrack would've involved a interactive soundtrack where every action adds to the music, but the composer Ben Prunty was opposed to that. Originally, the game was going to have separate battle and exploration themes, but playtesting showed that battles only lasted 30 seconds on average."Horror" would've been used for nebula sectors, but was found to be too scary, so it was omitted.Part of it was reworked into the new final sector theme, "Last Stand", making it a meta example of a Dark Reprise. "Federation" was to be the theme for the final sector, but it was not deemed climatic-sounding enough. The soundtrack features two Cut Songs, each of which originally had a purpose in the game:.Ben Prunty composed the soundtrack, but he also made some of the sound effects.

Some of the sector events in the Advanced Edition are written by Chris Avellone. There was also an additional "Ghost" race, which had 50% less health but could survive without oxygen note The abandoned sectors and the "Ghost" race were retooled and added to the Advanced Edition, with the race becoming the Lanius, who not only don't need oxygen, but actually suck it out of the room they're in furthermore, instead of having even less health than Zoltans, they have the same slightly-reduced speed as Crystals.
